Also spelled "yenta", this was at one time a name for high-class girls, being derived from the same word as "gentle". Thorough Yiddish theater however, it began to take on the connotation of busybody or gossip. In the Broadway musical "Fiddle on the Rood" the matchmaker was named Yente, it has also come to mean "matchmaker".
